Modifying the cap on SMSs a user can send per day, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has exempted text messages generated by or sent to technical systems and computers.

This includes text messages pertaining to a range of services, including booking of radio taxis, customer feedback to a company?s services, etc.

This is the second time the regulator has modified the SMS limit. Prior to this, it had limited the number of SMSs originating from one mobile connection at 100 to curb unsolicited messaging. Thereafter, it increased the limit to 200.

Meanwhile, TRAI has already issued a directive in this regard wherein it has categorised the information sent by a registered company to its employees or agents or its customers pertaining to services or goods to be delivered to such customers as transactional messages.

It has also issued directions to all operators to exclude all machine-to-machine and person-to-machine messages, where the machine is not a mobile handset and no manual intervention is required at the receiving end from the limit of 200 SMSs per day per SIM.
