
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is likely to terminate Idea Cellular?s licences in six circles, including Delhi, Karnataka and Punjab, say news reports.
Further, DoT may impose an additional Rs 3 billion penalty on the company for violating roll-out obligations.
It is believed that DoT will shortly issue a notice to Idea Cellular, asking it to stop offering services in the aforementioned six service areas.
Of these six licences, four belong to Idea Cellular in the Punjab and Karnataka circles and four licences belong to Spice Communications, which was acquired by Idea.
Prior to this, DoT had imposed a penalty of Rs 3 billion on Idea Cellular and the operator had approached the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) against DoT. Net, net, TDSAT had asked Idea Cellular to pay 50 per cent of the total amount.
