Reliance Communications , Bharti Airtel, Aircel, Tata Teleservices Limited, Vodafone Essar and Idea Cellular have seen a combined 70 per cent decline in new customer activations across Assam and North East in the first week of October.

This follows after the government extended the Jammu & Kashmir customer verification drill to these states on heightened security concerns.

The safeguards will be applicable to Assam and the North East on an experimental basis for six months.

Besides, the 15,000-odd multi-brand mobile stores in Assam and the North East have refused to comply with the new regulations stating that they must provide a legal undertaking to the operators accepting full responsibility for acceptance and verification of all pre-activation documents and photo identification.
