The Department of Telecom (DoT) has asked operators to ensure their legal monitoring systems are airtight to avoid unauthorised access to mobile conversations or e-mails.

Further, DoT has said that any violation could lead to cancellation of a company?s licence.

Reportedly, DoT claims that it has been alerted by ?national security agencies about instances of unauthorized access to these legal monitoring systems? that every mobile phone company has to put in place under licence conditions.

Under Rule 14 of the Indian Telegraph Act (Amendment) Rules, 2007, mobile phone companies need to have the necessary safeguards in place to ensure there is no unauthorised interception of messages.
