The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is planning toissue a consultation paper on the alleged predatory pricing strategy adopted by some operators. It has also asked operators to submit details of their tariff plans. The issue of predatory pricing was first pointed out by Bharti Airtel, which alleged that some new entrants in the GSM space were collectively resorting to such pricing mechanisms, and had thus requested the regulator to address the issue. The Association of Unified Telecom Service Providers of India has criticised Bharti’s move claiming that the operator itself offers a 17 per cent discount on calls to its own network and a 25 per cent discount on outgoing roaming calls which is synonymous with predatory pricing.
