DoT has asked the two state-owned telecom service providers, BSNL and MTNL, to stop providing 3G services until security agencies put in place a suitable monitoring system to track traffic on their networks. The decision to ask the two companies to halt services was jointly taken by the Intelligence Bureau and DoT. Earlier, BSNL and MTNL had contended that their 3G networks were capable of intercepting calls, and it was the responsibility of the security agencies to provide compatible equipment at the premises of the service providers with the cost being borne by the operators.
