US-based mobile operator Verizon Communications and Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) have successfully concluded a trial demonstration of 100 Gbps transmission via Verizon’s optical cables, deployed in March 2008. The demonstration, which showed that 100 Gbps traffic can be simultaneously transmitted with any mix of 10 Gbps and 40 Gbps on a normal 80 channel system, will enable operators to extend the lifetime of existing fibre cable networks while still achieving the capacities required for expanding bandwidth requirements.
