The implementation of mobile number portability (MNP) is likely to be delayed as the networks of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) need to be upgraded significantly. DoT, which had earlier set a deadline of December 2008 to launch MNP across the four metros, has now extended it to June 2009. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has asked DoT to direct the two operators to upgrade their networks within eight months. Meanwhile, the regulator has also asked DoT to grant the licence to set up a central clearing agency responsible for controlling and management of MNP in the country. It has also recommended that the MNP Clearing House Administrator should be licensed through a competitive bidding process.
