DoT has started allocating spectrum to new telecom players.
Shyam-Sistema, a joint venture (JV) between Shyam Telelink and Russia’s Sistema, has become the first of the new operators to receive start-up spectrum for CDMA services. The JV has been given 2.5 MHz in seven of the 21 circles it received licences for.
According to company officials, the JV will also be seeking GSM spectrum under the dual technology clause. According to sources, DoT is likely to start allocating GSM spectrum starting with the Tamil Nadu (including Chennai), Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala circles where enough spectrum is available for all new players.
