Bharti Airtel has collaborated with five international companies to build a $300 million high bandwidth undersea fibre optic cable called Unity, linking Asia and the US. The five companies are Global Transit (Malaysia), Google (US), KDDI Corporation (Japan), Pacnet (Singapore) and SingTel (Singapore). The Unity consortium has selected NEC and Tyco Telecommunications to construct and install the system, which, according to Bharti, will provide capacity to sustain the increased internet traffic between Asia and the US. The cable system is expected to be operational in the first quarter of 2010.
