AT&T has won a contract worth $1 billion to build a next-generation network for the US Treasury Department. It is the first order awarded by the federal government under a multi-billion dollar telecommunications programme known as Networx Universal. As part of the contract, AT&T will build a network called Treasury Network, combining data, voice and video in a single system. Apart from AT&T, other contenders for the contract include Verizon Communications and Qwest Communications International.
