Reliance Communication is planning to introduce GSM-based services in eight circles, mainly in the north, east and northeast.

The firm has already applied to the government for 4.4 MHz of spectrum in the 1800 MHz frequency to launch its GSM services in Delhi and Mumbai by the end of March 2007. Further, the company will invest over Rs 15 billion, mainly on equipment, and add 10-12 million new GSM lines. However, DoT indicated that Reliance may have to vacate a part of its CDMA spectrum for its GSM services. Though the information ministry has reportedly given its approval for Reliance to offer both services in the same circle, there are conflicting reports as to whether DoT approves of this.
