MTNL plans to apply for an NLD licence shortly, in an effort to bring down STD call charges for its basic telephony customers in Delhi and Mumbai. MTNL has already approached DoT for an NLD licence. The two reasons for this are the recent drop in licence fees and to avoid paying the carriage charges it currently pays to other operators to carry its NLD traffic.
