GAIL India is planning to enter the Rs 800 billion telecom market by acquiring a licence for national long distance (NLD) operations.
It will launch Project Triveni in association with Power Grid and RailTel to create the second biggest optic fibre network in the country with a reach of 60,000 km. According to reports, the licence would enable the company to provide virtual private network (VPN) services to the entire corporate sector and, particularly, 500 business houses which are already buying natural gas and are well connected with optic fibre cable (OFC) network.
