The GSM Association (GSMA) has selected US vendor Motorola to deliver a portfolio of handsets targeted at driving the uptake of mobile services in developing markets. In phase two of GSMA’s Emerging Markets Handset initiative, Motorola has been selected to deliver sub-$30 devices, with the 10 operators supporting the programme expected to order about 6 million of these low-cost handsets. The operators include GrameenPhone, AIS, Bharti, BPL, Globe Telecom, Hutchison Essar, Idea Cellular, MTN Group, Orascom Telecom, Telenor and Vodacom. Motorola had submitted two handset models in its proposal ?? the C113 and the C113a, specifically designed for the Emerging Markets Handset initiative. The handsets will be available in early 2006. Motorola previously won phase one of the programme, supplying handsets to 17 countries through 10 participating operators.
