
According to the report released by Facebook titled “State of Connectivity: A Report on Global Internet Access?, only 40 per cent of the world’s population is connected to the internet. The report added that the rate of growth of internet users was 6.6 per cent in 2014. Further, it has suggested that internet will reach four billion people in 2019, against three billion in 2014.
In the developed economies, around 76 per cent of the population is online. However, only 29.8 per cent of the population in the developing nations are connected to the internet. The report has cited access limitations by high costs, poor availability and a lack of relevant content as the major reasons behind the less use of internet in the developing countries.
As per the report, only 16.9 per cent of people were online in sub-Saharan Africa and 13.7 per cent in South Asia used internet in 2014.
