Here is a brief analysis of CDMA and GSM market share trends, at he national and state levels for the April-July 2006 period. As in the previous write-up, please note that we have included WLL-FWT in “wireless”, partly because Reliance provides only combined figures (digital mobile and WLL-FWT).

  • There was almost no change in CDMA and GSM shares of the Indian wireless market during the April-July 2006 period, according to our analysis based on the most recent subscriber figures released by the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) and Association of Unified Telecom Service Providers of India (AUSPI).
  • The subscriber bases of operators using the two competing technologies ?? GSM and CDMA ?? grew at strikingly similar rates, at 19.33 per cent and 19.56 per cent respectively.
  • In absolute terms, the total GSM subscriber base increased from 69.1 million to 82.4 million during this period. The CDMA base grew from just under 27 million to 32.2 million.
  • As a result, the GSM share of the total wireless market remained at the March 31 level of about 72 per cent and that of CDMA at about 28 per cent.
  • GSM increased its share by almost 2 full points in Chennai and by over a point in Madhya Pradesh.
  • CDMA increased its market share by almost 3 points in Himachal Pradesh, almost 2 points in Bihar and Haryana, 1.4 points in Uttar Pradesh (West) and 1.1 points in Rajasthan.
