As per the latest data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel gained 2.6 million and 0.75 million subscribers respectively in April 2024, while Vodafone Idea Limited (Vi) lost a whopping 0.75 million subscribers during the period under consideration. Meanwhile, during April 2024, the user base of Jio and Airtel expanded to 472.42 million and 386.51 million, respectively.
Separately, Jio further consolidated its market leadership in the wireline space in April 2024. TRAI data showed that Jio added 0.35 million wireline users, boosting its landline user base to 12.38 million. Meanwhile, market leader Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) lost 0.036 million wireline users. In addition, Airtel added 0.11 million users, boosting its wireline user base to around 8.89 million.
Further, the month of April 2024 witnessed Jio widening its customer market share to 40.48 per cent (from 40.30 per cent in March 2024), while Airtel’s market share rose to 33.12 (from 33.10 per cent in March 2024). In addition, Vi’s narrowed further to 18.77 per cent as against 18.86 per cent the previous month.
Besides, TRAI data showed that Vi gained customers in rural India, along with Airtel and Jio. Vi added 0.06 million in these geographies. In addition, Airtel and Jio gained 1.57 million and 1.25 million respectively. The data released by the regulator also showed that overall wireless tele-density increased marginally to 83.31 per cent in April 2024 from 83.27 per cent in March 2024.
During April 2024, 11.07 million users submitted requests for mobile number portability (MNP), increasing the cumulative requests from 962.53 million by end-March 2024 to 973.60 million by end-April 2024. The wireline user base increased from 33.79 million at the end of March 2024 to 34.26 million at the end of April 2024, registering a net increase of 0.47 million.
