As per WhatsApp India’s ‘User Safety Monthly Report’ under the Information Technology Rules, 2021, the messenger banned more than 7.1 million accounts in India in April 2024 for violating local laws.
The report stated that between April 1, 2024, and April 30, 2024, the company banned 71,82,000 accounts. Of this 1,302,000 accounts were proactively banned before receiving any reports from users.
With over 500 million users across the country, WhatsApp received 10,554 complaint reports in April 2024, out of which remedial action based on the reports were taken for six of those. Meanwhile, the company received two orders from the Grievance Appellate Committee in April 2024, which it later complied with.
