As per Rajesh Kumar, state chief secretary of Manipur, 5G spectrum trials will be carried out in the state within 50 days of telecom service providers (TSPs) receiving approval from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), covering rural, semi-urban and urban areas in India.
The DoT has granted permissions to TSPs for conducting trials for use and applications of 5G technology. Meanwhile, the TSPs have already tied up with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and technology providers which are Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung and C-DOT.
As per the permission letters, each TSP will have to conduct trials in rural and semi-urban settings in addition to urban settings so that the benefit of 5G technology proliferates across the country and is not confined only to urban areas.
Meanwhile, DoT has also specified that the trials will be isolated and not connected with the existing networks of TSPs. Also, the trials will be on a non-commercial basis. The data generated during the trials shall be stored in India. TSPs are also expected to facilitate the testing of the indigenously developed use cases and equipment as part of the trials.
