According to a report by Juniper Research, telecom operators are expected to make $ 17 billion of additional revenue from third generation partnership project (3GPP)-compliant 5G satellite networks between 2024 and 2030.
The research firm has urged telcos to partner with satellite network operators which will enable the former to launch monetisable satellite-based 5G services to their subscribers. Additionally, the research firm has advised telcos to prioritise immediate partnerships with satellite network operators capable of launching geostationary orbit (GSO) satellites, to capitalise on growth.
The first commercial launch of a 5G satellite network is expected in 2024, with over 110 million 3GPP-compliant 5G satellite connections operational by 2030, as per Juniper Research.
Furthermore, it stated that telcos could use their pre-existing billing relationships with mobile subscribers and enterprises as a platform to increase 5G satellite connectivity revenue over the next seven years. However, as 6G development speeds, it is predicted that operators will increasingly rely on satellite network operators for service provision.
