The 5G network in India has crossed the 200,000 mobile sites mark with the launch of the latest 5G site at Gangotri. The first 100,000 5G sites were rolled out within the first five months of the launch of 5G services in October 2022 and the next 100,000 sites were added in the next three months.

The 5G site at Gangotri was inaugurated by Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister of Communications, Electronics and Information Technology and Railways, and Pushkar Singh Dhami, Chief Minister of Uttarakhand. Addressing the inauguration event, Vaishnaw stated that practically every minute one 5G site is getting activated today. He added that India has now become an exporter of technology. Meanwhile, during his address, Dhami noted that the start of high-speed service will help in relief and disaster management, and surveillance while boosting the economy.

The ministers also dedicated optical fibre connectivity of Chardham – Badrinath, Kedarnath, Yamnotri and Gangotri – in Uttarakhand to the country.
