India is preparing for the rollout of 6G technology following the successful implementation of 5G, which is expected to drive the growth necessary for achieving developed nation status. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) secretary Neeraj Mittal opines the government has replaced the outdated 150-year-old Telegraph Act with a new Telecommunications Act, designed to remain relevant for the next 20 to 30 years.

In a move to enhance domestic manufacturing, the Union Cabinet has approved the establishment of 12 new industrial cities across 10 states, with an estimated investment of Rs 286.02 billion. These projects are strategically planned along six major corridors to optimise growth and development. Mittal added that these cities will play a vital role in catapulting India to a developed nation.

The new industrial areas will be located in Khurpia (Uttarakhand), Rajpura-Patiala (Punjab), Dighi (Maharashtra), Palakkad (Kerala), Agra and Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh), Gaya (Bihar), Zaheerabad (Telangana), Orvakal and Kopparthy (Andhra Pradesh), and Jodhpur-Pali (Rajasthan).

Furthermore, the DoT highlighted that Global Capability Centres (GCCs) established by overseas firms in India are experiencing growth rates of 10-12 per cent annually, underscoring India’s expanding role in the global technology landscape.
