According to telecom equipment vendor, Ericsson India, 4G, 3G and 2G subscriber base in India is expected to reach 105 million, 380 million and 650 million, respectively by 2020.

The company states that 3G subscriber base in India will grow from 70 million in 2013 to 390 million users in 2020. Meanwhile, 2G subscriber base will decline from 715 million in 2013 to 650 million in 2020. Further, the growth in 3G and 4G subscriber base will be driven by increasing demand for smartphones which will increase from 90 million in 2013 to 520 million in 2020.

Ericsson states that at present, mobile broadband data traffic is being driven by social media (15 per cent), browsing (11 per cent), application/content downloads (11 per cent), chat (7 per cent) and video (4 per cent). The telecom equipment vendor concludes that in order to meet the growing data demand, telecom operators need to make significant investments in their networks to enhance customer experience.
