The central government has told the Supreme Court (SC) that a special committee is looking into the issue of internet restoration in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) and is considering allowing 4G internet access on a trial basis in the union territory (UT).
To this end, the centre said that 4G access will be given in one district of Jammu region and one in Kashmir and the easing will come into effect after August 15, 2020.
Further, it informed the apex court that carefully calibrated easing of internet restrictions subject to strict monitoring in certain areas could be done on a trial basis. However, it will not be in any area adjoining international border or the Line of Control (LoC). 4G internet restoration will only be done in areas that have low intensity of terrorist activities.
These services were suspended on the night of August 4, 2019 and have remained unavailable for over a year.
