11 candidates have been shortlisted by the Search Committee for the post of chairman and managing director of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL).

This list includes R. K. Upadhyay, managing director, Telecommunications Consultants of India Limited; K. L. Dhingra, managing director, Indian Telephone Industries and Anil Kaushal, chief general manager (CGM), northern telecom maintenance region, BSNL, Ram Yagya, CGM, BSNL Chhatisgarh, N.N. Gupta, CGM, J&K, BSNL, A. K. Bhargava, CGM, MTNL, Rakesh Kapoor, CGM, Himachal Pradesh, BSNL, Aloke Kaul, CGM, Maharashtra, BSNL and Kuldeep Singh, CMD, MTNL.

The interview is to be held on October 10, according to Government sources. However, the BSNL employees union has expressed concern over the committee’s decision to change some of the eligibility criteria. A letter from G.L. Jogi from the Sanchar Nigam Executives Association to the Cabinet secretary notes that the efforts of the Sam Pitroda panel to induct best talent from within and outside BSNL is being reduced by arbitrarily changing the eligibility criterion.

The Association has further added that for BSNL, the need of the hour is to spot and rope in the best talent to steer the company out of deep waters, not to frame the eligibility conditions in a manner to constrict the selection to a few and thus defeat the objective for which the initiative to constitute search cum selection committee was taken.
