According to HIS, Coherent 100G port shipments for metro regional optical networks is expected to grow by 118 per cent in 2015 against 145 percent growth in 2014.
The adoption of 100G coherent technology has surged, first in long haul networks and now becoming a material part of metro networks. In 2014, 100G port shipments witnessed strong growth led by large purchases in China from China Mobile. Most of the100G coherent technology deployed in 2014 was for long haul applications, but metro regional (<600 kilometres) and metro access (<80 kilometres) applications will start increasing in 2016.
As per the research firm, market share of 100G is concentrated amongst leading players including Alcatel-Lucent, Ciena, Huawei, Infinera and ZTE. Going forward, the only potential catalyst for shifts in the industry will come from deployment in shorter reach metro and data centre applications which are going to be the next growth vector for 100G. Meanwhile, in 2017-2018, 100G coherent will witness significant growth, displacing 10G in the 80 kilometres or less metro-access market.
