According to Strategy Analytics, in the first quarter of 2013, India overtook Japan to become the third largest global smartphone market, with shipments nearly tripling year-on-year.

As per the firm, over 10 million smartphones were shipped to the country in the first quarter of 2013, compared to 3.8 million units in the first quarter of 2012. The country?s share in global shipments nearly doubled from 2.5 per cent in the first quarter of 2012 to 4.7 per cent this year.

Handset vendors Apple and Samsung accounted for the lion?s share of the Indian smartphone space. However, domestic manufacturers including Micromax, Karbonn and Spice witnessed the fastest growth.
