The finance ministry has sought clarification from DoT with regard to the proposed segregation of revenues generated from existing 2G and to-be-launched 3G services to work out the annual spectrum usage charges. At present, depending on their area of operation, all service providers pay 2-6 per cent of their gross revenues to the government as 2G spectrum usage charges. But for 3G, DoT is planning to impose a levy of 1 per cent of gross revenues from 3G services and that too, from the second year of starting 3G operations. The finance ministry has also suggested that the 3G auctions should not be delayed any further and be completed by December 2008.
