Reliance Jio to charge customers 6 paise per minute for voice calls to other networks

News , October 09, 2019

Reliance Jio has announced that it will now charge its customers six paise per minute for making calls to subscribers of other mobile operators. However, Jio has said that it will compensate them by giving free data of equal value. Prior to this, the operator was offering all voice calls at zero charges.

While calls within the Jio network and to landline phones will be available at zero cost, calls to other mobile operators including Airtel and Vodafone Idea will be charged. Further, incoming calls from all networks will continue to remain free.

This move by Reliance Jio comes in the backdrop of regulatory uncertainty regarding the interconnect usage charges. While until now Reliance Jio was paying this fee on behalf of the users to other players from its own account, it will now charge the users.

In a recent statement, Reliance Jio said that the 6 paisa charge will remain applicable until telecom operators are mandated to pay their competitors for mobile phone calls made by their users to other operators' network.
