Jio to commercially foray in home broadband space on September 5

Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has announced that Reliance Jio will launch its commercial home broadband services under its JioFiber brand on September 5, 2019.

The plans will begin from a minimum of Rs 700 a month and will go upto to Rs 10,000 a month for premium customers. The broadband speeds will start at 100 mbps at the lowest end and go upto 1 Gbps.

“We are pricing our plan at one-tenth of global rate to make it accessible for every home,” Mukesh Ambani, Chairman, RIL stated at the company’s 42nd annual general meeting. “On performance, the average fixed-line download speed in the US which is the most developed economy is around 90 Mbps. In India, even the most basic JioFiber plan will start with 100 Mbps speed and we have plans all the way up to 1 Gbps or 1,000 Mbps”, he added.

Key announcements/benefits associated to JioFiber

Landline connection: The users will get a landline phone connection, at no additional cost. Moreover, voice calls from home to any Indian operator - mobile or fixed - will be free always.

International calling: On fixed-line international voice calling, the company has announced the lowest fixedline rates for international calling. The default tariffs on Jio home phone will be one-fifth to one-tenth of existing industry tariffs. Also, Jio has announced an unlimited international calling pack at Rs 500 per month, to US and Canada.

OTT bundling: JioFiber plans will come bundled with subscriptions to most leading premium OTT applications. The company is also introducing a disruptive concept for watching new movies, and will offer its premium customers the option of watching movies at their homes on the day of movie release. The service will be launched in mid 2020.

Digital set-top-box: The users will get a digital STB along with the connection, which will support ultrahigh definition entertainment, virtual reality content, multi-party video conferencing, voice-enabled virtual assistants, interactive gaming, home security and many other smart-home solutions.

Free LED TV: JioFiber customers opting for annual subscriptions will get an HD or 4K LED TV and a 4K STB free, under the company’s JioFiber Welcome offer.

JioFiber service was announced on August 15, 2018, and interested registrations were invited from across India in a bid to prioritise JioFiber rollout into localities with the highest interest. The company has received over 15 million registrations from nearly 1,600 towns so far. Based on these Jio has drawn up a plan to reach 20 million residences and 15 million business establishments in these 1,600 towns. The company plans to complete its network rollout within the next 12 months.
