The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has requested the ministry of finance for a relief package to revive the telecom sector, which is currently weighed down under a debt of Rs 8 trillion.

To this end, DoT has sought a reduction of 6 per cent in the goods and services tax (GST) from 18 per cent to 12 per cent on telecom gear and services along with a refund of utilised and/accumulated GST input tax credits. Further, it has also sought a cut in the Universal Services Obligation (USO) levy from the current 5 per cent level to 3 per cent.

According to the telecom ministry, support to service providers (TSPs) with regard to duties, levies and instalments will  enable better cash flow and investible surplus for growth of the sector. The ministry added that the telecom sector is highly capital intensive and requires high capex periodically for network expansion and improvement.
