The government has decided to set up a secretary-level task force to draw a blueprint for driving up India’s mobile phone exports to a value of $110 billion. The task force will be steered by NITI Aayog chief executive officer Amitabh Kant.

According to industry sources, the push to set up the task force has come from the prime minister’s office (PMO). The PMO has reportedly written to NITI Aayog to include finance, commerce and Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology secretaries in a team to form a policy that could help India become a mobile manufacturing hub.

The PMO has suggested that the secretaries should form a policy that eliminates India’s weakness vis-à-vis other Asian countries. The measures that would help in doing so could include offering tax incentives that are World Trade Organisation-compliant, offering low manufacturing and design cost with highly qualified information technology resources. Further, the country needs to push its way into the export market with higher value-addition products.
