Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited has sought Kerala State Electricity Board’s (KSEB) permission to use 45,000 more electric poles for drawing optical fibre cable to widen its 4G network coverage in the state. At present, Reliance Jio uses around 12,500 KSEB posts.

Earlier in 2015, KSEB had given permission to Reliance Jio to use electric posts for a five-year period.

KSEB has been instructed by the government to not extend or forge any new contract with regard to the use of KSEB assets for telecom-data related activities without a prior consultation with the state government. Currently, the Kerala government is working towards the roll out of K-Fibre Optic Network (K-FON), which proposes to provide free internet connectivity to 2 million poor households and give connectivity to government establishments and schools.
