Ravi Shankar Prasad appointed as India’s new Telecom Minister

Ravi Shankar Prasad has been appointed as the new minister for communications, taking charge from Manoj Sinha. Meanwhile, Prasad continues to retain the IT and law ministries.

During the last four years, Prasad has been instrumental in giving a push to government’s Make in India program, and has been credited with initiating investments worth billions of dollars from top manufacturing companies from across the world. Currently, India has 268 mobile and ancillary manufacturing units. In 2019, India became the second largest mobile phone producers in the world in 2019 from just two mobile factories in 2014.

Earlier, Prasad had served as the telecom minister from May 2014 till July 2016. During this time, the industry had witnessed policies such as spectrum trading, spectrum sharing, spectrum liberalisation, virtual network operator, full mobile number portability and sharing of active and passive telecom infrastructure, etc.
