Niti Aayog planning to devise AI readiness index for states

Government's think tank Niti Aayog is preparing to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) readiness index in order to rank states on their ability to implement the technology for public service delivery and exploit its new potential.

Some of the parameters that the index would be based on could include digital skills, existing data capabilities, innovation capabilities and management in each state. However, these are yet to be finalised.

AI is estimated to add $957 billion to India's GDP thereby boosting India's annual growth by 1.3 percentage points by 2035. Hence, its early adoption has become one of the government's high priority areas.

Niti Aayog has already requested all states and ministries to identify key projects across the five recognised sectors where AI can be adopted.

Besides, Niti aayog was entrusted with the responsibility to develop the national programme on AI by the government in the Union Budget 2018-19 following which it released the national strategy for AI in June 2018.
