The Telecom Export Promotion Council (TEPC), that represents domestic telecom firms such as Sterlite Technologies Limited, Tejas Networks, Vihaan Networks Limited (VNL) and Birla Cables, has written to the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF) seeking clearance of dues worth Rs 14.32 billion.

The unsettled sum owed by the government is on account of its ambitious connectivity programs such as BharatNet Phase I and Left Wing Extremism (LWE) Phase I projects. This includes Rs 5.36 billion dues payable to Sterlite, Rs 3.13 billion to Tejas Networks, Rs 2.19 billion to Himachal Futuristic Communications Limited and Rs 0.98 billion to VNL, among others.

The companies have asked the government to release the amount it owes to maintain cash flows and further implement its connectivity programs.

As per TEPC, all outstanding dues are payable as per tender conditions. Further, TEPC stated that the government could at least release partial payments considering bank guarantees by these firms so that cash flows may not be affected. It added that the capital as well as operational dues were payable by the government’s implementing agency Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) to partner firms.
