According to IDC, online channels contributed to over 40 per cent of smartphone shipments in India during January-March 2019, recording a growth of around 20 per cent on year-on-year (YoY) basis. This growth can be primarily attributed to attractive offers and new launches by vendors like Xiaomi, Samsung, Realme, and Huawei.

Offline channel, on the other hand, observed a flat YoY growth due to large shipments in the festival season during quarter ended (QE) September 2018 and December 2018, which led to high channel inventory. However, IDC expects the brick-and-mortar channel to observe a strong growth in 2019.

IDC highlighted that the online channel outpaced the offline channel despite recent changes introduced to FDI rules for ecommerce.
