According to Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL), the voluntary retirement scheme (VRS) proposed by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) can potentially save Rs 10.8 billion in annual wage expenses for the operator and the telco expects about 9,500 employees to opt for the scheme.

Earlier, the DoT had proposed a revival plan for the financially stressed government owned operators, MTNL and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL). The proposed revival plan entails components like VRS, asset monetisation, and allocation of 4G spectrum.

As per industry sources, the revival plan may be taken up by the cabinet soon.
