According to a report by the UBS, while Bharti Airtel is making progress in the 4G realm, Reliance Jio is increasingly focussing on becoming the preferred primary voice SIM for subscribers.

As per UBS, there has been a decline in multi-SIM ownership as much less subscribers are now changing their main SIM in comparison to 3-12 months ago. Further, competition is getting stiffer in the smaller towns.

The UBS survey highlighted that there has been a material reduction in multi-SIM ownership from 1.33 times to 1.22 times between March-April 2018 and December-January 2019. Among smartphone users, this declined from 1.5 times to 1.36 times during the period under consideration.

As far as customer satisfaction levels are concerned, UBS said that it is comparable across the three main operators in metros. However, in non-metros, Airtel and Vodafone Idea’s customer satisfaction levels are much less than that of Reliance Jio’s.

Further, the willingness of respondents to change their primary SIM was observed to be higher in metros, which presents a great opportunity for Reliance Jio to gain market share in these areas.

UBS also noted that Airtel has significantly increased its share of smartphone subscribers, while Relaince Jio is maintaining its dominant share. But VIL is losing share.
