The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has released Rs 1.71 billion to pay outstanding salaries of Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited’s (MTNL) 23,000 employees.

Meanwhile, it has also assured the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) management and employee unions that employee salaries will be paid before the festival of Holi on March 21, 2019. BSNL, however, will be releasing this fund from its own cash flow. Employee salary dues of BSNL amount to Rs 8.5 billion. BSNL had defaulted on the disbursement of the salaries to 170,000 employees for the month of February 2019.

Earlier this week, telecom minister Manoj Sinha had met with finance minister Arun Jaitley to seek funds to meet salary payment requirement of the two government controlled telecom operators.
