According to a joint study conducted by Assocham and PwC, India's data consumption is expected to increase from 71,67,103 million MB in 2017 to 10,96,58,793 million MB in 2022, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of about 72.6 per cent.

The study also pointed out that until 2013 an average Indian used to spend more on voice services than on mobile data services. However, this trend has changed as now majority of an average mobile bill is spent on data.

While the average monthly spend on voice services and data in 2013 was Rs 214 and Rs 173, respectively, the average monthly spend on voice services and data in 2016  was Rs 124 and Rs 225, respectively.

As per the report, mobile internet penetration will increase from 30.2 per cent in 2017 to 56.7 per cent in 2022. Given this increase in internet penetration, connectivity and consistency in speed issues need to be addressed.
