According to a report by International Data Corporation (IDC) Xiaomi had a market share of 28.9 per cent during 2018, which was the highest in the Indian smartphone market during the year. It was followed by Samsung which had a market share of 22.4 per cent and Vivo (10 per cent).

The report also stated that the premium smartphone segment witnessed the maximum growth during 2018 with a year-on-year (YoY) growth of 43.9 per cent. OnePlus emerged as the market leader in the premium segment range of $500-700. Meanwhile, Samsung surpassed Apple with its Galaxy S9 series to emerge as the leader in the super premium segment.

The share of the online channel grew to an all-time high of 38.4 per cent in 2018, whereas the offline channels witnessed a 6.7 per cent annual growth. The increase in the online channels could be attributed to increase in shipments by Xiaomi, Asus and OnePlus among others. On the other hand, the offline channel was unable to keep pace with the deep discounts and go-to-market initiatives from the e-tailers almost throughout the year.

As per the report, the average selling price of smartphones stood at $158 on the back of high shipments in the $100-$200 segment, which accounted for more than half the smartphone market in India.

Further, the feature phone market was largely driven by Jio Phones, which accounted for close to 56 per cent of the total feature phone market, at a YoY growth of 10.6 per cent.
