Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) has sought claims of about Rs 5 billion from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).

As per industry sources, these claims have been sought under multiple heads. This includes telecom facilities provided to the DoT, compensation for retirement benefits given to employees who were originally from the DoT (along with interest), and buildings of the state-owned corporation leased to the DoT, amongst others.

The settlement of these claims is critical for MTNL, which incurs a monthly cost of around Rs 1.8 billion as employee salaries and is yet to pay the wages for the month of January.
