Experiential smartphones to drive sales in India in 2019, says techARC

February 05, 2019

According to techARC’s India Smartphone Segment Sales Forecast 2019, smartphones will witness 13 per cent growth in sales in 2019, owing to large volume of 4G to 4G smartphone replacement projected to take place during the year.  As per techARC, a large number of 4G smartphone users were added between 2015 and 2016 and these are now due for replacement as these users will now purchase their second 4G Smartphone in 2019.

Sharing the insights from the report, Faisal Kawoosa, founder and chief analyst, techARC, said, “There is a benchmark for majority of the 4G smartphone users and they will be looking for a replacement which gives them better experience compared to what they have in hand. Though very subjective and personal to each user, experience will be measured by how efficiently and effectively the 4G smartphone adapts to the multiple roles that a user would want the device to play.  For instance, a video player, camera and so on.”

The report further concluded that over 80 per cent of the sales will be for $140 and above smartphones while the low-end smartphones will see a decline in sales.  This is primarily due to negligible number of switches from feature phones to smartphones.  On the contrary, the user switch journey will continue to be from feature phone to smart-feature phone to smartphone. This will primarily be due to the introduction of JioPhone in the market.
