Vodafone Idea partners with Genus Power Infra for conducting NB-IoT trials

February 05, 2019

Vodafone Idea Business Services (VIBS), the enterprise arm of Vodafone Idea Limited (VIL) has partnered with Genus Power Infra to establish a commercial proof of concept (PoC) of narrowband internet of things (NB-IoT) networks in India.

To this end, advanced trials are being conducted around one of the most promising use of NB-IoT  automatic metering infrastructure (AMI) at Genus’s research and development facility at Jaipur. Further, the company has conducted pilots in Kochi, Kerala, Jaipur, Bangalore and Chennai for various use cases.

VIBS is planning to take NB-IoT services pan India in the next 12 months with an aim to capture a major chunk of the market, which is set to reach a valuation of Rs 50 billion in the next three years.

According to VIBS, these intensive trials would bring in the age of massive IoT deployments in the country and would also take ahead the government’s Digital India and Make in India initiatives.

Earlier, Vodafone Plc launched NB-IoT networks in many countries including Czech Republic, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Australia, Netherlands, and South Africa. The company has over 74 million connections and network and services platform supporting a wide range of business-critical applications.

Meanwhile, Genus has conducted NB-IoT trials globally and has also been a part of the digitisation and power reforms phase in India.

Commenting on the alliance, Nick Gliddon, Chief Enterprise Business Officer, Vodafone Idea said, “NB-IoT is the next growth engine in the IoT space which allows greater network coverage, improved battery life of 10 years plus for devices, and the ability to slice and partition the network for specific use case, to make massive IoT deployments commercially viable for enterprises across verticals. We are excited to partner with Genus Power Infra, a leader in energy meter manufacturing and look forward to bring alive more exciting deployments and projects which will help build a better digital enabled India and make truly smart cities a reality soon. With the power of NBIoT, we look forward to bringing digital transformation in the fields of agriculture, healthcare, utilities (energy, water and gas distribution) and smart city applications.”
