Government extends deadline for receiving public comments on draft IT rules to January 31, 2019

The government has extended the deadline for receiving public comments on Draft of Intermediary Guidelines 2018 from January 15, 2019 to January 31, 2019.

Earlier, on December 24, 2018, the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) had released draft amendments as per which social media and online platforms will be required to trace the origin of information when asked by government agencies. Further, the platforms will be required to ask users to refrain from hosting, uploading or sharing any content that is blasphemous, obscene, defamatory, hateful or racially, ethnically objectionable.

In a recently held meeting with MeitY, various stakeholders such as activists, law firms and public advocacy groups have pointed out that the proposed changes to IT laws will lead to censorship and not achieve the government’s goal of removing objectionable content from the web.
