DoT to introduce a mechanism to rank states basis their broadband readiness

December 05, 2018
E-mail Print PDF

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is planning to introduce a comprehensive mechanism to rank states on their broadband network deployment readiness. DoT may even incentivise top performers in an effort to encourage the states to prepare the digital infrastructural groundwork for eventually deploying 5G services.

To this end,  DoT will shortly mandate an independent agency that will work on a ranking methodology for states. This will include parameters such as- funds allocated in state budgets exclusively for fast broadband deployments, steps taken to align state right of way (RoW) rules with central guidelines, facilitating deployment of public WiFi hotspots, steps taken to ensure connectivity to uncovered areas, policy measures taken to boost fiberisation of networks and urban/rural broadband penetration in states.

As per industry sources, these matters are likely to be discussed at DoT’s upcoming meeting with state chief secretaries on December 17, 2018.
