Paytm has removed its in-app chat feature due to high scaling costs. Following this move, the inbox feature will focus primarily on content, through games, news and videos.

Paytm has taken this move as it is competing with WhatsApp, which had entered the payments space earlier this year on the back of Unified Payments Interface (UPI).

Earlier in June, the payments app had announced that its chat feature had crossed 120 million monthly active users since its launch in November, 2018. This feature let the users chat with each other using messages, share photos and videos, and send and receive money.

Meanwhile, WhatsApp’s payments feature has not yet been fully rolled out. In this regard, the company had recently written to the Reserve Bank of India to allow it to roll out its payments service for all its customers.
