According to a report by real estate consulting firm CBRE, Mumbai has the maximum number of data centre operators in India followed by Bengaluru and the National Capital Region (NCR).

Mumbai has secured the first spot because it is one of the global cable landing locations in India. Cable landing stations are vital international telecommunication links between countries across the world. At present, Mumbai has four out of the ten cable landing stations in India.

According to CBRE, India holds massive potential to become the next destination for data centres, driven by demand created by businesses. Overall, the data centre market outlook for India looks positive on the back of the availability of land and skilled talent pool along with a huge, untapped market, the report said.

The report highlighted some factors responsible for promoting India as a potential data centre hub such as a growing economy, rapidly expanding consumer base, increasing domestic and international demand from corporate among others.

However, there are several states in India which are yet to formulate policies for this segment. Issues such as a cumbersome approval process for the acquisition of infrastructure and prolonged environmental clearances need to be addressed.
